A brief history of 4x4 tyres

4x4 vehicles have evolved considerably since the first four wheel drive system was built at the end of the 1800s. Early 4x4 vehicles were used by farmers for ploughing and also by the military as sturdy vehicles able to travel long distances and carry considerable loads whatever the road surface.

During the 1980s the 4x4 became popular as the multi-purpose vehicle of choice, providing excellent off-road characteristics but also on-road drivability and in the 1990s many more affordable options became available on the market. 4x4 vehicles are now considered an excellent choice for families and more often than not are designed for on-road use, with luxury, comfort and performance characteristics being paramount.

We’ve come a long way from these simple beginnings to today’s modern vehicles, and as such 4x4 tyres have had to evolve every bit as much as the vehicles themselves.

The requirements of 4x4 tyres are complex and specific to the motoring needs; whether drivers are looking for off-road use, driving on rough terrain or increasingly for on-road use as part of a luxury or family vehicle and they continue to be one of the fastest growing tyre products in the UK.

Performance and luxury 4x4 tyres Modern 4x4 vehicles require high performance 4x4 tyres which bear similar properties to their car tyre counterparts, providing excellent grip and road holding for responsive handling. These are mostly for on-road use (95% on-road) as they do not provide much grip off-road in unpredictable conditions.

Similarly, the higher end 4x4 vehicles are often fitted with luxury 4x4 tyres as standard which share many performance tyre characteristics and also provide excellent comfort and low noise levels for on-road use.

Going off-road - all terrain and mud terrain 4x4 tyres

With off-road tyres there is less emphasis on comfort and noise, with performance and traction in demanding conditions being of principal importance. There are two types of off-road 4x4 tyres; all-terrain and mud-terrain. Both tend to have sturdy, aggressive tread designs, deep grooves and are resistant to impact, particularly mud-terrain tyres.

All-terrain tyres tend to be 50% off-road, 50% on-road allowing owners to have a balance between the two requirements. Technological advancement means that all-terrain tyres can provide excellent handling and comfort but also longevity across varied road surfaces.

Mud-terrain tyres are best for off-road use (80% off-road and 20% on-road) as they can be noisy and uncomfortable on normal road surfaces due to rugged tread designs and the tough properties making up the tyre compounds. However they are ideal for rough terrain providing excellent grip and traction on loose and slippery surfaces.
