What Are Budget Tyres?
Budget tyres are usually the cheapest tyres you can find, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re all low quality. Although they’re unlikely to live up to the high standards set by premium brand tyres or even mid-range tyres, they’re actually a great way of saving money on tyres in certain situations.
They’re best for drivers who only drive infrequently and therefore have low annual mileage. This is because budget tyres are likely to wear more quickly than their more expensive alternatives. They’re also usually a little less grippy and adaptable than more expensive tyres and so aren’t as well suited to motorway driving, but if you primarily drive on main roads or lanes, they could be perfect for you.
The main differences between budget tyres and premium tyres include that budget tyres wear slightly quicker, make a little more noise, and provide a little less grip.
Are budget tyres safe?
One of the main reasons for the difference in price between budget and premium tyres is the amount of research and development put into the products. This means that budget tyres are generally less predictable as they’ve been through less in-depth testing.
However, this doesn’t mean they’re unsafe. In fact, in dry conditions, the differences between budget and premium tyres probably won’t even be noticeable. It’s only when the roads are wet that you might notice increased stopping distances and slightly decreased grip.
These downsides don’t mean you’re putting yourself at risk by using budget tyres, just that you should adapt your driving style to account for the difference.
Are budget tyres good value?
Budget tyres can offer excellent value, especially if you are using them infrequently and only for main road driving, as recommended. They can be significantly cheaper than premium tyres and although they won’t last as long or offer the same level of performance, are perfect for a second car that only gets used once a week, as a short-term solution, or in place of part-worn tyres.
