Understanding Tyre Ratings

54.Tyre Ratings 1

From November 2012, all European vehicles have to display a special tyre label. The label will allow consumers to make an informed decision about the tyres they are buying. Based on the ratings on the labels, tyres are graded from A (best) to G (bad.)

The label will display information about three critical areas.

  • Exterior Rolling Noise

The label rates exterior noise generated by the tyres from one to three. Rating no. 1 indicates a quiet tyre, rating no.2 indicates a moderate noise- producing radial and rating no. 3 indicates noisy tyres.

  • Fuel Efficiency

Efficient tyres account for more than 20% of your car’s energy efficiency. Fuel efficient tyres require less energy to roll and this means lower fuel consumption. Manufacturers rate the fuel efficiency of the tyre from Green (A) to Red (G.) According to Goodyear, the difference between using an A-rated and a G-rated tyre could save you as much as 6 litres of fuel per 1000kms.

  • Wet Braking Performance

Braking efficiency is also noted on the label. According to EU standards, wet grip is rated from A (highest rating) to F (lowest rating.) Choosing A-rated tyres over F-rated ones will increase wet braking distances by more than 18 metres.

All passenger car, van and 4x4 tyres sold by Tyre-Shopper will be carrying the EU label; browsing the label will help you make an informed purchase. You will be able to choose energy efficient but affordable tyres. Along with information on the label, it would be a good idea to refer to customer reviews and ratings on our website before purchasing.
