What are tyre speed ratings?
One tyre metric that is important for vehicle owners to understand is the Tyre Speed Rating.
How Fast Should You Drive?
The Tyre Speed Rating is either a letter of the alphabet or a letter and a number. The Tyre Speed Rating is displayed on the side-wall of each tyre and indicates the fastest speed that a driver should not exceed when their vehicle gets fitted with this type of tyre.
Examples of the speed rating numbering system are A1, A2, A3… to A8, in sequence, and the letters B to Y. A full chart displayed below provides the rating and the highest acceptable speed for the tyre in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour measurements.
What Type Speed Rating Do Most Vehicles Require?
In general, most vehicles used by people or families fit into the speed rating of S or T for 112 or 118 miles per hour limits (180 or 190 kilometres per hour).
Sports cars need tyres that can handle faster speeds. These types of vehicles need tyres with speed ratings of W, Y or (Y). The ratings make sure that speeds not exceeding 168 miles per hour (270 kilometres per hour) are comfortably handled.
Why Are The Speed Ratings Important?
It is a good idea to think about how you use your vehicle. Do you mostly make short city-based commutes interspersed with the occasional leisurely ride out into the country on weekends? If this is the case, then choosing a tyre with a lower speed rating will save you some money.
On the other hand, if you regularly travel between major cities on the motorways, crisscrossing the country to visit clients or partners, then you may well take the outside lane on the motorway to get there faster. In which case, a higher-rated tyre would be required to handle the types of speeds you’ll be travelling at.
Use the ‘Search by Registration’ box above to find your vehicle tyre rating.
EU Tyre Ratings
New regulations with the EU offer improved tyre information for buyers using the EU Tyre rating system. The EU tyre rating system ensures that understandable ratings for fuel efficiency, braking times in wet road conditions, and tyre noise levels provided for each tyre.
