Caravan Club Discounts

Before setting off on any journey it is important to check your caravan tyres, the last thing you want is to be pulled up on the hard shoulder spending the start of your trip with a puncture. But it isn’t just flat tyres that you should check for; also make sure to look for signs of aging or damage which can include objects embedded into the tyre wall, cracks, lumps or even cuts. It may be surprising but caravan tyres are not made specifically for the use of caravans but are the same tyres we use on cars or small commercial vans. They are however, used differently as they do not need to cope with high-speed braking, but they do need to accommodate increased pressure from heavier loads.

Tyre Law

It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that the correct tyres are fitted to the caravan as indicated by the manufacturer’s guidelines. Tyres must be the same size across the axle and meet the same load index and speed rating. It is vital to stay on top of these requirements as failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points issued per tyre.

Tread Depth

Like all car tyres and light commercial vehicle tyres, the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. Caravan tyres have additional considerations when it comes to tyre tread as due to their relatively low mileage and reduced time spent on the road, the rubber and overall tyre quality can deteriorate. Replacing your caravan tyres every three years is standard practice to maintain a good safe tyre.

Tyre Pressure

Drivers are encouraged to regularly check their tyre pressure. Always refer to the manufacturer’s handbook to comply with the correct inflation pressure, as both an under-inflated or over-inflated tyre can lead to problems such as uneven wear which can lead to a reduced performance on the road. Always ensure the valve is in a good condition and that the cap is securely fitted.

Noseweight

The noseweight of a caravan is an essential element for vehicle balance. It should be determined by the laden weight of the caravan for the optimum unit for towing. The size and type of vehicle towing the caravan will have an impact upon this. It is estimated that this is set at 7% of the laden weight.

Storage

Extending the life of your caravan tyres is easy. Examine them for any signs of damage and give them a quick clean to remove and traces of material that can deteriorate the rubber such as petrol. If you are removing these from the caravan make sure you cover them from the sun as UV rays can be particularly harmful. It is advisable that the caravan is securely jacked up to release pressure from the tyres, as long as they are turned regularly throughout the storage process their shelf life will be prolonged.
