The tyre manufacturing segment has been in constant growth and development over the past couple of decades. Tyre manufacturers are constantly struggling to produce new and improved products that will better respond to consumer needs and also increase overall vehicle performance.

The market itself is a constant battle between manufacturers, as each one strives to increase their consumer re-acceptance and therefore increase the number of units sold and profits.

We will take a look now at which are the current leading tyres manufacturers from the turnover point of view, operating profit and pre-tax profit in 2011.

The first on the list is Bridgestone. The company recorded a turnover of €27,310.3 million in 2011, with €833.3 million more than in 2010. From this figure tyres withheld 84%, meaning €22,940.7 million.

In terms of operating profit, the company recorded €1,727.4 million in 2011, with an actual growth of €186.8 million in comparison with 2010.

In terms of annual net income Bridgestone recorded in 2011 a figure of €930.1 million, with a growth of €15 million in comparison with the previous year.

The second company on the list is Michelin. The company had a turnover of €20,719 million in 2011, with €2828 million more than in 2010. The percentage that tyres withheld from this amount was of 98%, meaning €20,719 million.

In terms of operating profit, the company recorded €1945.0 million in 2011, with €250 million more than in 2010.

The annual net income of Michelin recorded in 2011 was €1,462.0 million which meant a growth of €413 million in comparison with the previous year.

The second runner up is Goodyear. The company recorded a turnover of €16.364 million in 2011, meaning a growth of €2.154 million in comparison with the previous year.

The figure was determined 100% by tyres. In terms of operating profit, the company recorded €983.3 million in 2011, exceeding the 2010 profit by €291.3 million.

In terms of annual net income Goodyear recorded in 2011 €230.7 million, the first year in plus after a negative period and an overall growth of €393.7 million.

The third runner up is Continental. The turnover that the company achieved was of €30,540.9 million in 2011, by €4458 million more than in 2010.

Tyres occupied only 28.8% of the figure, bringing only €8,811.5 million from the amount. The operating profit recorded by the company was €2,596.9 million in 2011, which resulted in a €661.7 million growth in comparison with 2010.

In terms of annual net income Continental had achieved €1,242.2 million which meant a €666.2 million increase from 2010.

The last on our list is Pirelli. The company recorded a turnover of €5,654.8 million in 2011, with €806.4 million more than in 2010.

Tyres withheld a vast majority from this figure, 99.1%, the equivalent of €5,601.6 million. In terms of operating profit, the company obtained €581.8 million in 2011, meaning an increase of €174.1 million in comparison with 2010.

The figure for the annual net income recorded in 2011 was €451.6 million, which is €429.9 million more than in 2011.
