Goodyear OptiGrip Tyres – Tyre Safety Innovation Touches New Heights
Goodyear Tyres has long been regarded as one of the most innovative tyre manufacturers in the world, investing in technologies that deliver value to customers.
The company broke new ground in area of tyre safety technology with their Goodyear OptiGrip tyres, which deliver superior grip and control on wet surfaces even when (hold your breath, here comes the big one) the tread is worn out.
The Goodyear OptiGrip tyres are the result of the company’s superior R&D efforts, but by no means, the lone star in the Goodyear arsenal. The Goodyear range also contains the popular Goodyear EfficientGrip tyres that deliver maximum fuel efficiency without compromising even one iota on the performance.
The Magic Behind the Goodyear OptiGrip Tyres Performance
To be able to deliver superior wet grip levels even in the worn condition (in fact tyre tests conducted clearly establish this), seems nothing short of magic, but it is actually made possible by a unique technology the SmartWear technology.
What is SmartWear Technology
The Goodyear patented SmartWear technology comprises a combination of two specially designed compounds arranged in layers in a top-bottom fashion. The top compound by itself offers excellent dry handling and control because it is equipped with 3d interlocking mechanisms that maximise the contact patch. Also the top compound contributes to tread stiffness and prolongs tyre life.
Impact of SmartWear Technology on Wet Performance
As the top compound wears, the bottom compound layer with its hidden grooves is exposed. These now act as new water evacuation channels, keeping the wet grip at the same high levels as before. Therefore resistance to aquaplaning remains high at all times, throughout the life of the tyre. Thus when you are driving on the Goodyear OptiGrip tyres, you are assured of shorter braking distances, even on worn out tyres.
Tyre Tests for the Goodyear OptiGrip Tyres
In tests conducted by several independent agencies, the superior wet performance levels of the worn out Goodyear OptiGrip tyres has been established. In fact in some cases, the worn out tyres showed better results than comparable new tyres!
According to an official press release on the test results, after 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 kilometres of drive, the Goodyear OptiGrip tyres stopped 4%, 7% and an astounding 20% shorter than two leading comparable competitor brands.
The Goodyear OptiGrip tyres are summer tyres and available for fitment on 15 and 16 inch alloy disks.

Only a couple of thousand miles so far, but very pleased with roadholding and feedback.

Very good grip indeed, even in the wet or extreme cold. First impressions however were of a slightly noisier and harsher ride than the previous Toyo R32's. Also had to get the wheel alignment adjusted (previously it was perfect) as the steering was off centre as soon as these went on. Only other downside is 4mpg less than Toyo's, but MUCH better grip!

A good tyre, but slightly more road noise than previous set of Nexen N 6000.
