Mar 2012: Continental Launches New Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
Continental Tyres the Americas (CTA) chose the ongoing Mid-America Trucking Show at Louisville as the platform for launching its newest Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
Called the ContiPressureCheck, this system has been developed for the US market specifically to cater to the requirements of commercial trucks. Continental tyres revealed that the product will become available on the market by the end of March.
ContiPressureCheck Details
ContiPressureCheck is a revolutionary tyre pressure management system that constantly keeps a check on both the tyre pressure and temperature.
These critical tyre details are made available to the driver in real time and on demand. As a result, truck drivers are warned in advance before the tyre pressure or temperature drops to levels that may compromise safety.
How Does the ContiPressureCheck Work?
The ContiPressureCheck combines the best of Continental technology expertise in various areas like sensors, data processors and in-cab displays.
The sensors are sensitive enough to record even the slightest changes in tyre pressure and temperature. They constantly monitor these two tyre parameters and send the data to the data processors in the truck’s electronic control unit.
Here the data is processed and interpreted and a suitable message is displayed on the in-cab display system. As the driver comes to know the current tyre pressure and temperature, he can take quick decisions with regard to corrective action before any untoward incident occurs.
The sensors, the data processors and communication system are enclosed in a rubber casing that is fitted on to the inner surface of the tyre.
ContiPressureCheck Incorporates Unique Temperature Compensation System
Continental revealed that a compensation for the temperature is incorporated into the tyre inflation data.
This is important because as the vehicle is moving, the tyre’s contained pressure naturally increases. As a result, a hot tyre that is under inflated may show the right pressure if there is no temperature compensation.
This would be inaccurate reading and defeat the very purpose of the system. The ContiPressureCheck has a built temperature compensation system to address this issue.
Continental further added that while measuring the temperature, the system takes into account the temperature inside the tyre at its most optimal point to minimize the effect of outside elements on the temperature.
Benefits of ContiPressureCheck
ContiPressureCheck is an important system that greatly increases the safety associated with commercial truck driving. With access to accurate pressure and temperature data, it is possible to take corrective action at the earliest to avoid accidents.
Also incidents of truck break down can cause work interruption that ultimately affects business profitability for fleet owners. Besides, tyre pressure in an important parameter for increasing fuel efficiency.
“Driving on under inflated tyres increases fuel consumption and when we are talking of a large fleet, not paying attention to this critical issue can result in increased fuel spending. With the ContiPressureCheck, it is possible for fleets to cut down the overall operational costs”, said Mr. Clif Armstrong, Commercial Vehicle Tyre Marketing Director, CTA.
