Discount tyres – are they really a bargain?

With so much hype from retailers these days, it’s not always clear if the discount tyres you are being offered are really a bargain or whether the so-called ‘original price’ is something of a scam. On top of that, it’s quite likely that some of the discount tyres you will see may be from a manufacturer you’ve never heard of – which is a bit like buying a watch on your holiday beach; you pays your money and you takes your chance! In fact there is no reason why buying discount tyres cannot be an absolute bargain if you know what to look for.

All tyre retailers, whether in the high street, a discount warehouse or online, will offer discount tyres so it’s up to you to choose what’s best for your car and pocket. The first thing to remember is to check that you don’t have to pay extra for fitting, balancing and disposal of the discount tyres you are offered – unless they’re cheap enough in the first place of course. Once you’re comparing like-for-like you can then decide whether to choose a leading brand or one of the lesser known discount tyres – but just how do you decide?

One way to choose discount tyres is of course to compare the exact same tyre brand and model and simply look for the lowest price. Your choice however, may be limited to what is available on the market at the time you are looking. A better way to choose discount tyres is to simply seek out the tyre specifications you need to suit your car and look for the best bargain amongst all the discount tyres you are offered. There are a number of ways you can do this, including looking at the tyres on your car and using online searches.

Most online retailers of discount tyres provide a variety of search facilities on their websites and you can use these to search for discount tyres in a number of ways; by entering your car make and model perhaps or even your registration number. However, if you take the trouble to find the right specification for your tyres, which will be something like 185 X 60 VR, you can enter these figures and you will be presented with a large number of choices, within different price bands, that will include all special offers and discount tyres.
