Ensure Your Tyres Are Safe Before Setting Off On Holiday

With more families holidaying in the UK this summer, TyreShopper supports TyreSafe in encouraging drivers to check their tyres before going away. Just a few simple checks including tyre pressure, tread depth and general tyre condition are fundamental to driver and passenger safety to help ensure a trouble free journey.

Tyre Pressure - under-inflated tyres can result in premature tyre wear, reduced fuel economy and potential blow outs due to the additional heat build up inside the tyre. Over-inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling. Holiday luggage will add to your vehicle's load so it's worth checking your manufacturer handbook and increasing your tyre pressures as per manufacturers' recommendations.

Tread Depth - tread depth allows more water to disperse from the tyre in the wet and is therefore essential for safe braking. Poor tread depth increases the risk of aquaplaning. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm and each illegal tyre can result in a £2,500 fine and three penalty points, however, TyreSafe recommends changing your tyres before they reach the legal limit as this can significantly reduce stopping distances in the wet.

General Tyre Condition - a quick check of the general condition of your tyres for things such as stones or objects in the tread, uneven tread wear (which could indicate that steering needs re-aligning) or cuts and bulges in the sidewall can reduce the risk of problems occurring en route.

For peace of mind you can have your tyres checked professionally by one of TyreShopper's approved fitting partners.
