Tyre Information: Cold Weather and Winter Tyres

Fact: Nearly a fifth of vehicle accidents in wet and wintry conditions happen as a vehicle skids out of control across the road - almost twice the rate as in the dry. (Source: Department Of Transport)

For this reason, more than 60 million motorists in Europe will swap their summer tyres for winter tyres in November and December.

Why? Well, normal summer tyres begin to stiffen as temperatures fall below 7 degrees Celsius. This in turn causes them to become less flexible and their grip on the tarmac is greatly reduced.

Winter tyres however are produced with greater levels of silica and this helps them to remain supple at low temperatures. This suppleness allows the tyre tread to form an effective contact with the road surface, providing much greater levels of grip.

In conjunction with Avon Tyres, Tyre Shopper is delighted to bring you some extra special prices on Avon winter tyres. Simply look out for the snowflake symbol (Snowflake) as you scroll through the options available for your vehicle.
